How to Renew Your FCC Amateur Radio License

How to Renew Your FCC Amateur Radio License

A newly issued FCC amateur radio license is valid for a period of 10 years.

Many hams simply forget to renew their license, especially if they've gone inactive for a period of time.

You are able to renew via the FCC website beginning 90 days from, and up to, your expiration date.  However, If your license does expire, all is not lost.  You will have up to 2 years from the expiration date to renew your license. However, you are not allowed to transmit anytime in that 2 year period until you renew.

Do not let your license expire!  Renewing your license via the FCC website is absolutely free.  The steps to renew are easy to follow.

{Ed.: Unfortunately, the FCC begins collecting a fee of $35 for license renewals beginning April 19, 2022.}

Before you can renew, you need to visit the following link which will allow you to perform a call sign search so you check on your license status and expiration date.

Here are the steps you need to take to renew:

1. Have your CORES (COmmission REgistration System) password ready. If you don't have one, register here: https://apps2.fcc.gov/fccUserReg/pages/login.htm

2. Note your FRN (FCC Registration Number)

3. Continue here to renew and modify your license: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp

4. Select "Renew Licenses" in the left margin menu. If you are within the 90 day period up to your expiration date, or past the expiration date, but within 2 years, your call sign will be listed in the "Filter by Radio Service" box. Select it and click "Add" so it moves to the "Licenses to Renew" box. Follow instructions from there and you will be all set.
